Senior Thermal Process Specialist

Description

This role will work within a Research & Development (R&D) team responsible for designing, validating, and commercializing processes for liquid infant, toddler, and adult nutrition products. The engineer will apply thermal and non-thermal processing principles to facilitate the design of robust and safe processes for liquid products, while also helping the team identify new technologies and improve the existing ones.  The role will involve significant amount of hands-on work in the laboratory, pilot plant, and manufacturing environments. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

As a part of this role, the engineer, after completion of a basic orientation and training, will:

•    Serves as R&D Thermal Process representative or Team Leader for Process Validations on projects with functional or cross-functional teams to accomplish objectives of innovation projects.
•    Support Retort and Aseptic Manufacturing Plants for thermal and non-thermal process design, process testing, and deviation analysis.  
•    Develop and deliver influencing and strategic technical communication to key stakeholders, management, and team members with compelling technical recommendations and the business case for implementation. 
•    Responsible for simulating, developing, and optimizing processes to fully leverage varying manufacturing capabilities at domestic and international sites.  
•    Identify innovative concepts and technologies, perform rapid technical assessments, and incorporate into functional and commercially viable processes as applicable.
•    Conduct trials and retort heat penetration and distribution studies in pilot plant and manufacturing environments independently or under supervision of senior team members.
•    Use and maintain basic food lab instrumentation such as pH meters, viscometer, weigh balance, water activity meter, and data traces. Order lab supplies when needed. 
•    Develop, monitor, and control budgets for projects and innovation efforts as applicable.
•    Assist product development and pilot plant associates in experimental trials and equipment operation.
•    Comply with EHS & GMP practices and policies.
•    Resolve processing-related problems using hypothesis driven, structured problem solving.
•    Keep organized thermal process records and laboratory notebooks in compliance with good scientific and regulatory standards.
•    Collect and analyze data, write validation protocols and project reports independently. 
•    Communicate technical information, both written and verbally, to R&D and other cross-functional teams.
•    Manage time, space and material resources to allow for efficient and timely delivery of project or departmental objectives.
•    Embrace team work attitude and display strong work ethic while working effectively with all levels of personnel in a lean, heavily matrix organization.

The engineer will use their expertise in thermal processing and process engineering through this role, also utilizing their problem-solving abilities and leadership skills. They will be provided opportunities to lead team members and professionals to shape the future of infant & toddler nutritional products industry.

Requirements:

1. B.S. in Chemical or Food Process Engineering or related field.   
2. Experience with multiple food/diary unit operations, specifically retort and aseptic liquid products.
3. Strong Technical Leadership skills and experience in process research and development experience.  
4. Tenacity for scientific problem-solving and stringent criteria for accountability in decision making. 
5. Excellent innovation and analytical skills coupled with commitment to continuously seek feedback and build alignment with key stakeholders.
6. A strong history of leading by influence and delivering results with excellence.
7. Relevant work experience and demonstrated history of success.
8. Excellent interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
9. Ability to work well in a fast paced, multi-task environment under pressure and tight time constraints where a high degree of teamwork, flexibility, and collaboration are required.
10. Must be able to work effectively with all levels of personnel in a lean global R&D matrix organization.
